Myofascial Release
Sustained, gentle pressure on the body's connective tissue to release tension and relieve pain.
How Myofascial Release Can Help
- Chronic muscle pain
- Tissue tension & tightness
- Restricted movement
- Postural strain
- Recovery from injury
Myofascia are the connective bands that surround the muscles, bones and organs throughout the body. When this tissue becomes tight or restricted — through injury, poor posture, repetitive strain or simple accumulated tension — it can cause pain and limit movement, often in places some distance from the original problem.
What is myofascial release?
Myofascial release is a hands-on therapy focused on tissue dysfunction, pain and tension. The treatment involves applying gentle, sustained pressure to the affected areas — typically held for around three minutes at a time — allowing the fascia to soften, lengthen and release rather than being forced.
This slow, patient approach is what sets myofascial release apart from a conventional massage. Fascia responds to time and steady pressure, not speed, so the therapist waits for the tissue to yield naturally. The pressure is then combined with a number of different styles of remedial massage to enhance the effect and build on the results of the treatment.
What can myofascial release help with?
Myofascial release may help if you are experiencing:
- Chronic muscle pain or tightness that keeps returning
- Areas of tension that ordinary massage never quite seems to reach
- Restricted movement or a feeling of being “knotted up”
- Postural strain from long hours at a desk or repetitive work
- Lingering stiffness following an injury
Because fascia forms a continuous web through the body, releasing restrictions in one area can bring relief elsewhere too — which is why the treatment takes the whole body into account rather than chasing symptoms in isolation.
What to expect at your appointment
Your therapist will begin by discussing your symptoms and history, then assess where the restrictions in your tissue are likely to be. During the treatment you will feel slow, steady pressure rather than vigorous strokes; many people describe a gradual melting or softening sensation as the tissue releases.
Afterwards you may feel looser and lighter almost immediately, though it is also normal to feel mildly tender for a day or so as the body adjusts — much like after any effective hands-on treatment. Drinking plenty of water and moving gently helps consolidate the results.
For long-standing patterns of tension, a short course of sessions usually achieves more than a single visit, and your therapist will advise on what is realistic for your particular problem.
What Clients Say About Our Myofascial Release
“Nick Johnson is amazing at acupuncture and massage. He has fixed me countless times and is worth seeing for maintenance too and stopping niggles becoming something bigger. The price is very reasonable and the treatment rooms are great. Friendly and helpful staff upstairs in the Pharmacy too. Highly recommend.”— tommc7
“I telephoned Fairlee and got amazing help from all and Nick Johnson has transformed my life. After many years of pain from too much back surgery and being near crippled, his combination of acupuncture and physio has done so much more than a spinal cord stimulator (now removed), pills and all other medical treatments. I now walk straight. The Team at Fairlee are all very friendly and helpful.”— David Wittich
“He identified all the 'knots' on my back and neck and worked on them for 45 minutes of deep tissue massage followed by acupuncture. Last night was the first night I slept. Today I am sore, but no migraine. Can't thank him enough. He knows exactly what he is doing and he works with the patient. Real gem in South West London.”— Evi Sif
