One of a multitude of massage disciplines we offer at the Fairlee Wellbeing Centre, LomiLomi massage is a deep, cleansing massage designed to heal both body and mind. Whilst it remains a popular form massage for many of our patients, very little is known and understood about this unique massage discipline by those who have considered a course of LomiLomi for themselves.
So, we thought we would put together a brief history of the discipline so that our patients would know where the massage came from and how it is carried out.
Ancient Full Body Massage
LomiLomi is believed to originate from the ancient Polynesian peoples who settled and then spread throughout on the islands of Hawaii. The word “LomiLomi” means “massage therapy” or “Hawaiian massage”, and refers specifically to a unique full body massage that uses long, flowing strokes from head to toe. Strokes are delivered in a smooth, flowing and continuous motion, with gentle pressure applied to both the top and the underside of the patient’s body.
Central to LomiLomi is the Hawaiian philosophy of Huna, and in particular how the principles of Huna relate to bodywork and the healing process.
Huna states that everything seeks to exist in harmony, and that everything seeks love. When this harmony is lacking, energy channels are blocked resulting in pain, either physical, emotional, mental or spiritual. LomiLomi massage is intended to bring every aspect of individual wellbeing into harmony, taking mind, body and spirit into account in order to deliver a profound sense of calm.
Traditional LomiLomi Massage Technique
The aim of each massage is to unblock energy channels within the patient, which is why the practitioner will work across the entire body.
Traditional LomiLomi massages are lengthy and oil based. At the Fairlee Wellbeing Centre our specialist LomiLomi massage therapist uses her forearms, hands and occasionally elbows to deliver long, broad, rhythmic strokes across the entire body. Each massage is carried out in the Hawaiian spirit of Aloha and with the complete concentration and focus of the practitioner.
The massage is heavily oil based, which is why we do advise patients to receive it without clothes; throughout the massage the patient is covered with either a loin cloth or a sarong.
What are the Benefits?
As a flowing, dynamic and holistic massage, LomiLomi confers a number of benefits for the patient. Patients often experience an intense sense of calmness, relaxation and comfort, as well as relief from mental or emotional stress. Because of the nature of the massage, our practitioners can also help to assist blood and lymph flow and also eliminate wastes and toxins from the body. This in turn can profoundly benefit the body’s muscular, lymphatic, immune and digestive systems.
