Chiropodists / Podiatrists are specialists in diagnosing and treating foot disorders and deformities.
The treatments we provide can range from simple toe nail cutting, to gait analysis (biomechanics), orthotics and sports injuries.
We provide foot health care to patients of all age groups and will accept referrals from GP’s and other health care professionals
Routine Chiropody
This primarily involves the removal of callous, corns, as well as nail cutting. More importantly, the Podiatrist can give advice or provide treatment to target the cause and aim to prevent further recurrence.
Diabetic Footcare
Diabetics can develop foot complications including loss of sensation in the feet that in can result in damage and injury. People with diabetes should have annual foot assessments to monitor any loss of sensation. The podiatrist will provide diabetic footcare advice and treatments of all foot related problems.
Verrucae Removal
A verrucae is a wart that is caused by the human papillomavirus occuring commomly on the soles and toes of the feet. Verrucaes are a common complaint amongst children and adults. A verruca is a small skin lesion which is commonly found on the bottom surface of the foot. The lesion is usually approximately 1cm in diameter but can be larger. Sometimes a single wart may have many small satellite warts surrounding it, this is called a Mosaic Wart.
Ingrowing Toe Nail
Ingrowing toenails can occur when a nail has been damaged or is deformed. The main cause of ingrowing toenails is unsuitable footwear, including shoes with inadequate toe-box room and tight stockings that apply top and or side pressures. Less frequent causes include improper cutting, genetics and trauma. The nail grows into the skin causing pain and sometimes leading to infection. This condition can be very painful and sometimes requires surgical correction under local anaesthetic.
Athletes Foot
Athletes’ foot is caused by a fungal infection. If left untreated the fungus can spread to the toenails, making them thickened and yellow.
Footcare / Foot Health Advice
Healthy feet are essential to keep you mobile and it is a good idea to have an annual foot check.
Biomechanics and Orthoses
Biomechanical assessment analyses your skeletal make up and looks at how you walk, identifying any link between your function and injuries you may be prone to.
Treatment will most likely consist of the introduction of orthoses (3D insoles). In some cases the correction obtained from the introduction of the orthoses will not be enough to fully rectify your symptoms. It may be appropriate for us to recommend other treatments, these may include; stretching, change in footwear for activity or short periods to allow the orthoses to work, injections, x-rays or scans.
