We could all do with a little help sometimes, to get the best out of ourselves and to create a satisfying and enjoyable life. In early childhood our minds absorb information at a faster rate than any other time, but it isn’t always helpful. Sometimes we draw conclusions and form beliefs about ourselves and the way the world works that can become rigid, ingrained and resistant to change. Examples of such beliefs may be “I’m only safe if I never make a mistake or upset anyone” or “I’m only safe if I can control everything around me”.
These beliefs are outside of our everyday awareness, yet they colour and shape so much of our lives, affecting our relationships, the choices we make and our successes and failures. A deep-seated belief such as “I’m bad and deserve to be punished” can draw us to abusive relationships or other destructive situations which we consciously strive to get away from, yet they repeat and repeat, leading to a sense of hopelessness and despair. EMDR in Clapham is an extremely effective therapy that can undo these self-limiting beliefs and allow your mind to implement much healthier, self-affirming beliefs. It stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, which is a therapy originally designed to help severely traumatised people, such as survivors of war, rape, assault or natural disaster.
EMDR has been extensively tested and is recommended under the NICE guidelines (National Institute for Clinical Excellence). However, EMDR is also extremely helpful for people who have not been through such extreme events, but who are nevertheless burdened with accumulated ‘small traumas’, such as inadequate parenting or school bullying. EMDR can help you to put the past behind you, resolve irrational fears and use your energies more creatively and productively going forward. It could be one of the best investments you make in yourself.
